Answers to the questions we hear most, a short list of fixes for common issues, and a short form if you still need a hand.

Frequently asked

Basics

  • Does the recipient need to install Qryo to read a code?

For a single Branded code with no password, no. The iOS Camera opens a lightweight Qryo App Clip that decrypts the message on the spot. Discreet codes, password-protected codes, and anything split into multiple pieces still need the full Qryo app.

  • Does Qryo work without internet?

Yes, completely. Encryption, decryption, scanning, and generating QR codes all run on-device. Airplane mode is fine. The app makes no network calls in normal use.

  • Can Qryo read QR codes that weren't made with it?

No. Qryo only decodes its own payload format. A QR code generated by another app will not produce a meaningful message in Qryo.

  • Will codes I made on an older version still decrypt?

Yes. Backward compatibility is a core promise; codes you make today are designed to keep decoding in every future version. If a serious flaw ever forces an exception, we will flag it loudly inside the app and provide a migration path.

Splits and passwords

  • I lost a code in a split. Can I still decrypt?

Only if you still have enough pieces to meet the threshold you chose when locking. A 2-of-3 split unlocks with any two of the three codes. A 3-of-3 needs all three. There is no backdoor. If you are below the threshold, the message cannot be recovered.

  • What if I forget the password?

There is no password reset. Qryo never stores your password or your message, so there is nothing for us to look up. Pick a password that is memorable to you but hard for anyone else to guess: a long passphrase you can recall tends to beat a short, complicated string.

  • Is one stolen piece of a split enough to attack the password?

No. Qryo derives the message key from both the secret-sharing material and the password-derived key together, so a single share leaks nothing useful. An attacker still needs enough pieces to clear the threshold before any guessing is possible.

Pro and purchases

  • What does Pro add over Free?

Bigger splits (up to 10 pieces instead of 2), the Discreet QR style, PDF export of all codes, and stronger key hardening. Encryption itself is identical in both tiers. See the Pro page  for the full breakdown.

  • Is Pro a subscription?

No. Qryo Pro is a one-time in-app purchase. Family Sharing is included, so up to six members of your Family Sharing group get Pro at no extra cost.

  • How do I restore my Pro purchase on a new device?

Open Qryo on the new device, tap the gear icon on the home screen to open Settings, then tap Restore Purchase under Qryo Pro. Apple verifies the receipt against your Apple ID. You do not need an account with Qryo because Qryo does not have accounts.

  • Is encryption different between Free and Pro?

No. Same primitives, same security guarantees. Pro adds more ways to create and share codes; it does not change how the cryptography works.

Privacy

  • Why doesn't the app have an account?

Because we'd rather not have one to defend. No account means there is nothing to sign up for, nothing to sign in to, no profile to leak, and no server-side state to compromise. Your data stays on your phone where you can see it.

  • What does Qryo collect about me?

Nothing. No analytics, no crash reporting, no telemetry. The privacy policy linked below has the full statement.

Troubleshooting

  • The camera doesn't open when I try to scan

Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera on your iPhone, find Qryo, and turn it on. If Qryo is not in the list, open the app and try scanning once. iOS will surface the permission prompt.

  • I can't import a saved QR image

Photo-library access is requested only when you tap the import button. If you previously denied it, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → Qryo and grant access. Qryo only reads the specific image you pick. It does not browse your library.

  • A scan won't decrypt

Two common causes: the password is wrong, or you are missing pieces from a split. Double-check that you are scanning a Qryo-generated code and that you have the correct number of pieces for any split.

  • iOS Camera scanned a code but no App Clip appeared

The App Clip only triggers on a Branded, single-piece, password-free code. Discreet codes, password-protected codes, and splits require the full Qryo app. Install Qryo from the App Store and the same code will open inside the app.

  • Pro features aren't unlocking after purchase

Tap the gear icon on the home screen to open Settings, then tap Restore Purchase under Qryo Pro. If that does not work within a minute or two, force-quit Qryo and reopen. Apple occasionally needs a moment to propagate the receipt.

  • Family Sharing is on but my family member sees a paywall

Confirm that Qryo Pro shows as shareable in the buyer's Apple ID under Settings → [Name] → Family Sharing → Purchase Sharing. The recipient then opens Qryo and taps Restore Purchase under Qryo Pro. Apple resolves Family entitlements through Restore, not automatically on first launch.
